What a detail actually fixes
A detail is not the same as a car wash. Inside, it means vacuuming out the floor mats and seats, wiping down the dash, doors and console, and getting into the corners a quick wipe never reaches. Outside, it is a proper wash, not a drive-through rinse, plus the glass, because streaked or hazy windows undo most of that work the moment someone gets in.
Robert Elder wrote that when his friend brought her car in for tires, brakes and a full service before winter, their detail guy also cleaned it up, and in his words, made it look like new.

Alongside a service, or on its own
Most details happen alongside another job, because the car is already in the shop and it makes sense to have it looking as good as it runs by the time it is handed back. It also stands on its own: a car can come in just for a detail, with no other work attached.
Either way the process is the same, vacuum and wipe-down inside, a full wash and glass outside, with nothing skipped because the car is also in for brakes or tires that day.

Why it matters past the day you pick it up
A clean car holds its resale value better than a dirty one, and it is the first thing anyone test driving it from the Union Gap lot actually notices. That is as true of a car JBR is selling as one JBR is servicing: a used car that has been detailed before it goes on the lot presents the way the mechanical work behind it deserves.
